A Taste of Morocco In December 2024 & January 2025

Traditional blue-coloured fishing boats at the port in Essaouira
This is a selection of photographs from a visit to the African country of Morocco in late December 2024 and January 2025. Notes on images will be found at the end of this page. Places visited include the cities of Agadir, Marrakech, Ouarzazate and Essaouira, as well as a trip through the High Atlas Mountains to Ait Benhaddou, Fint Oasis and the Atlantic coastal region in Southern Morocco.

Notes on Images in order of display

  1. Essaouira street scenethe presence of cats in all parts of Morocco, but particularly in Essaouira on the Atlantic Coast, is greater than anywhere else I can think of. Tiny kittens hide on every street, and the community of cats as a whole helps create a calming and relaxed vibe, while locals regularly cycle along the narrow streets within the old Medina.
  2.  Goat feeding from argan tree - just south of Sidi Kaouki surfing village the road winds its way through the hills by the coast, and along the way I passed many goats climbing up the argan trees while herders stood close by with mules and dogs which are very protective of the goats.
  3. Seagulls in Essaouira - at all times of the day there is a large gathering of gulls which the fisherman feed with their unwanted fish brought in from the days catch.
  4. Small fishing boats - the port of Essaouira contains a large number of small blue boats, along with large fishing vessels and ships which are constructed by hand. Here the dominant blue is complemented with orange buoys
  5. Fishing boats the shapes and colours of the small boats in Essaouira lends itself perfectly to photography and has a strong art community. Artists have long been inspired by this wonderful city.
  6. Fishermen in Essaouira - there is constant movement and fishing activity in the port, and the small blue boats also work well for black and white photographs by providing good contrast.
  7. Fishing ships - the large fishing ships usually head out to sea with smaller tug boats in front and following behind. One of the ships in this photo is reversing, and there's three figures and approximately eight gulls in this shot.
  8. Fishermen offloading cargo - this shot reveals how busy the local fishing families are on a daily basis, where the ships are constantly being loaded and unloaded. One fisherman standing by a stall wanted to show me a huge blue shark which was being kept in ice inside a trailer.
  9. Seagulls in motion - it's possible to walk along the edge of the wall to get a view of the coast and the port, which is particularly photogenic and inspiring at sunset.
  10. Seagulls and ships in the background you can see a row of ships which are under construction and usually take around a year or more to complete, while the gulls continue to cause a commotion at the first sight of food.
  11. Cat sitting by a canon - the castellated wall contains a row of canons and the cats are always friendly, with some of them allowing you to pick them up and walk around stroking them.
  12. Incoming wave at Sidi Kaouki - I hired a bicycle from one of the shops in Essaouira and cycled here via Diabat. There's a number of stray dogs in the village, most of them extremely friendly. In this scene a woman grabs the hand of a child and runs away from the wave which caught them unawares.
  13. Sands of time - the beach at Sidi Kaouki is very relaxing and extends for miles along the coast, with locals offering camel rides, horse riding, and surfing lessons.
  14. Fint oasis in violet tone - the mosque tower dominates one side of the lush palm grove where local villagers are often chatting in the streets or fetching goods on their mules, while the surrounding landscape is one of raw desert and mountain.
  15. Building reflecting in beach - this is the building that greets you when you arrive at Sidi Kaouki from Diabat, which is now in a ruinous state. The village is expanding with more and more holiday villas being constructed.
  16. Little turtle - I found this little creature sitting in the middle of the road when I cycled along the coast south of Sidi Kaouki and picked it up to put the little one out of harms way. The turtle happily wandered off away from the road.
  17. Argan tree goat - these goats are incredibly adept at climbing to the tops of the trees from which they feed on the leaves and fruits, while the argan oil is used extensively by humans for a variety of purposes.
  18. Sunset light in Essaouira - these are the types of small stalls set up on a day to day basis by locals hoping to sell their fresh fish. Some of them arrive by bicycle towing the trailers that will contain ice and fish.
  19. Sunset in Marrakech - the famous Jemaa El-Fnaa square is a place of frenetic energy located in the centre of old Marrakech and really comes alive in the evening when food stalls are set up and street performers generate small crowds. Among them are snake charmers, dancers and individuals who offer photo opportunities with monkeys for a small amount of dirhams.
  20. Koutoubia in Marrakech - the stunning mosque with its minaret is usually off-limits to non-Muslims, while the ancient law that forbids any other building in Marrakech to rise above the height of the koutoubia is still in effect today.
  21. Snake charmers in Marrakech - some of the individuals that make up these groups sit and play music while others try to entice visitors to take close up photos and even handle some of the smaller snakes in return for Moroccan dirhams
  22. Cobras in Jemaa El-Fnaa square - this is their work
  23. Street performer - whether charming snakes or playing their music, this is how they make some money
  24. Colourful performers - the people of Marrakech are colourful and enjoy talking and performing
  25. Two Moroccan men - after demonstrating the long pour of their famous mint tea
  26. Camel with man praying - cable cars take visitors up to the kasbah on the hilltop overlooking the city of Agadir, and camel rides are offered around the castle. The words that light up on one side of the hill at night time translate as God, King, Country
  27. Sunset at the kasbah in Agadir - the mountains in the background lead into the High Atlas Mountains which are often covered in snow
  28. Agadir - a multiple exposure of the tourists at the hilltop castle and a view of the city of Agadir as it lights up in the evening
  29. Moroccan man with bird kite - locals are busy trying to sell a variety of things to tourists, and this man waits on the beach of Agadir hoping to sell some bird kites. It's also common for locals to sell boxes of fruit for a mere euro
  30. Ait Benhaddou - view of the mud-stone village built on the side of the hill with small ruined kasbah on the top. It's worth noting that this World Heritage Site has been taken over by film crews constructing more buildings on one side to make it appear larger for the purpose of shooting new Hollywood movies, so it feels very much like a film set at present. Lots of movies have been filmed in this region, with Atlas Studios located nearby in Ouarzazate
  31. View of Ait Benhaddou - the sight of the village never fails to impress, and it is surrounded by desert and mountains with a river flowing towards Ouarzazate
  32. Inside Ait Benhaddou - morning sunshine turns the village red. This is shot from one of the streets inside
  33. Camel on Sidi Kaouki beach - these beautiful animals are very calm
  34. Bridge to Ait Benhaddou - a row of hotels line the main street, with various restaurants and shops. It can get very cold at night. This is shot from the terrace of one of the restaurants
  35. Atlantic Ocean - waves at Sidi Kaouki beach
  36. Fisherman and ship at Essaouira - the city has a fascinating history, and the islands are home to migratory birds
  37. Road to Fint Oasis - signs are in Arabic and English, yet the second language in morocco is French. I hired a bicycle and cycled from the city of Ouarzazate to this magical oasis. The road elevation is above 1,500 metres at this point, but increases more if you carry on. The oasis is reached by a long winding descent
  38. View of Fint Oasis - shot after hiking over the highest rocks, which can be challenging to climb due to loose stone
  39. Palm trees at Fint - the lush oasis with its thirsty date palms
  40. View of Fint at sunset - notice the dramatic rock formations that greet you on arrival
  41. Road out of Fint - soaring cliffs in late afternoon sunshine
  42. Donkey in Fint - the small rustic village houses mules which the locals use for carrying heavy loads
  43. Turtle in colour - exotic little dinosaur creatures
  44. Meal in Fint - I was invited into the home of an African family and offered some bread with olive oil and a bowl of sweet palm dates to get me back to Ouarzazate on my bicycle. In return for their generosity I offered them some Moroccan dirhams
  45. Fint - in the foreground is the mosque, while the rocky hill in the background was the highest point I reached on my hike around the oasis
  46. Rustic village - Fint has two hotels and restaurants, one on either side of the river, and most of the houses are as simple and makeshift as you can imagine
  47. Village centre - sunlight effect in Fint
  48. Main street in Fint village - half the houses on one side are mostly rubble
  49. Hilltop view - this shot reveals how expansive the desert landscape is and includes part of the Atlas Mountains on the far horizon line, while beneath us the oasis becomes lush
  50. Seagull in Essaouira - with the colourful port in the background
  51. Essaouira port - with another seagull in the foreground
  52. Fishermen - busy
  53. Close up camel - partly illuminated against the kasbah in Agadir
  54. City view at sunset - dominated by some cats in the foreground

This blog post contains a selection of photographs which I made in the middle of February 2025 on a visit to Madeira – a Portuguese island in the Atlantic just north of the Canaries. It's known for having a warm and pleasant climate all year round, even in Winter, and also for having some of the best hiking trails in the world. It's also known by many people as the  vertical island  due to its incredibly steep mountains which rise from the ocean. Madeira is a green and lush island with some very impressive coastal cliffs.

As we move from Winter into Spring time, one place I ventured into for the first time last week was the dramatic moorland region around the North Yorkshire villages of Clapham and Austwick. As you make your ascent on the steep tracks, incredible panoramic views open up across the Forest of Bowland to the south. And as you ascend farther into the Dales you encounter all kinds of interesting boulders, crags, and screes. The distinctive dry stone walls and many field barns confirm that you are well inside the National Park, with streams gushing from the hills and limestone pavement dominating the views of the famous Yorkshire three-peaks once you arrive on high ground.

The smartphone offers an alternative way of drawing and seeing. Even when you're not one for spending very much time looking at little screens, and swiping and tapping and scrolling, the smartphone can still be a useful device if you happen to be without your usual materials. And of course a tablet would be the next step if you was really inclined to using a digital means of sketching, especially if your focus is going to be on landscapes. As small as the touchscreen is, it responds to subtle movements made by the finger or thumb. No app was used here, just the basic photo editor which allows you to make marks over the top. The phone I used was a Samsung Galaxy S8 Edge. Very small compared to most.

Thank you for the memories to those whom I met on my journey to the famous lagoon, - in particular Florentina and Theodora who invited me to Padua to show me the sights of this nearby town at night. Tina was a most knowledgeable guide, whilst Dora kept us amused with her hilarious accent. Also, best wishes to Kalina and Milena. I very much look forward to revisiting Venezia in the future. Even though the days are only short, and the weather still quite cold and unpredictable, the light in January is still dazzling as you can see.

It felt more like the depths of Winter, rather than the start, during my five-day's of hiking across high land at the end of November. The North Pennines is a vast area, featuring the highest paved roads in the country. And the weather can be more changeable than anywhere else; atop Great Dun Fell there's a radar and weather station specifically for studying the clouds, because here you get the highest amount of precipitation.

The following selection of images represents some of my recent travel photography on a visit to the southernmost Greek island of Crete in late September to mid-October 2023. When viewing these pictures, imagine if you can the sound of bells jingling as mountain goats pass across the mountainsides and roads, the loud noise of crickets, the smell of salt air from the Mediterranean and Libyan sea, and of the chatter of the Cretan folk with their warm hospitality as they prepare their wonderful cuisine rich in olive oil and complemented by their drink offerings of raki and retsina.

This is a visual diary in photographs from a few days of hiking and mountain climbing in the English Lake District last weekend. I covered quite a lot of ground from the high mountain of Helvellyn in the East across to the more Westerly mountain of Haystacks before descending in to the Buttermere Valley. It was very lively down by the shores of Lake Buttermere as an annual paragliding event was taking place, with people dropping from aeroplanes and flying off most of the surrounding high peaks before trying to land as close to the target in one of the fields. Some of the participants descended in somersaults leaving colourful trails of smoke behind them.

It is possible to cycle all the way around the Lake District National Park in a day without stopping, and yet despite the modest scale and altitude of these mountains compared to the world's greatest mountain ranges it can still feel extraordinarily remote and wild when you're hiking in the district, with mountain terrain which is just as challenging and impressive as any other. The quality of light and how dramatically the light and shadows shift across the fells here is second to none. This is because it's like a miniature version of any other rugged mountain region. And late last week I hiked across some of the highest peaks including Bow Fell, Scafell Pike, Kirk Fell and Pillar, following a route from Great Langdale to Wasdale and finally on to Borrowdale via Green Gable and Gillercomb.

This is a series of photographs shot during a hike in to the mountains earlier this week on a visit to the central and western Lake District. I made my way up to a fell summit called Allen Crags via Sprinkling Tarn and Esk Hause. Many of the steep footpaths were quite treacherous due to the ice, and the snow on the tops was knee deep in places. The wind was blowing quite strongly from the north, so added to the already freezing temperatures was a wind chill making it feel much below freezing.
